He holds a degree in Mineralogy and Crystallography from the University of Belgrade (1995), a master's degree in Engineering and Materials Science from the University of Belgrade (1997) and a PhD in Materials Engineering and Metallurgical and Chemical Processes from the Pontifical Catholic University of Rio de Janeiro (2003) .

Fernando Rizzo has a PhD in Materials Science from the University of Florida, with a postdoctoral degree at the University of California, Los Angeles.
